Bayern Munich booked their place in the Audi Cup final with a comfortable victory over Sao Paulo on Wednesday evening.
Pep Guardiola picked a strong side for
the clash, with Bastian Schweinsteiger, Phillip Lahm and Arjen Robben
all named in the starting XI.
But it was the Brazilian side who
started the brighter, and Aloiso went close early on, when he unleashed a
fierce low drive from just outside the box, but Manuel Neuer reacted
quickly to save.
Despite Sao Paulo’s fine start, Bayern
controlled the majority of the first period and Rogerio Ceni had to be
at his very best to deny the Bavarians, with Arjen Robben and Franck
Ribery both stinging th stopper’s palms.
Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic was
introduced at half-time as Bayern pressed for an opener and he opened
the scoring in the 54th minute with a simple tap-in after a fine cross
from Robben.
And the German giants doubled their
lead in the 87th minute, when Mitchell Weiser converted from close-range
after Xherdan Shaqiri’s initial effort cannoned back off the woodwork.
Sao Paulo then had a fine chance to
set up a grandstand finish 60 seconds later when Jerome Boateng gave
away a penalty, but Ceni’s spot-kick hit the post.
Bayern will now face Manchester City in the final, after Manuel Pellegrini’s men beat AC Milan 5-3 earlier in the day.
