Tottenham didn't disclose the club Dempsey was joining, but British
media are reporting that he will move to Seattle Sounders for around £6
million ($10.3 million).
Dempsey is the highest-scoring American
to have played in the English Premier League, with 57 goals in his time
at Fulham from 2007-2012 and then Tottenham last season. He moved to
England after leaving New England Revolution in 2006.
"We have
reached agreement with Major League Soccer for the transfer of Clint
Dempsey," a statement from Spurs read. "The United States international
returns to MLS after making 43 appearances and scoring 12 goals in our
colours following his signing from Fulham last summer.
"We wish Clint every success for the future."
Dempsey
wasn't a regular in Andre Villas-Boas's starting team but his move is
still surprising given Tottenham could lose another forward, Gareth
Bale, this off-season to Real Madrid.
Dempsey came to England as
an attacking midfielder but has developed into a potent forward in
recent seasons, starting up front for USA too.
He will be among the highest-profile players in the MLS should his transfer be completed.
Tottenham
has signed striker Roberto Soldado from Valencia and winger Nacer
Chadli from FC Twente in the Netherlands this off-season, providing more
competition for Dempsey at White Hart Lane.
