Borussia Dortmund had a fairy tale run to the Champions League final
and firmly established themselves as a top European club. However, given
the meagre resources over which they built their victories, there was
little they could do to prevent any sort of a mass exodus of players.
Bayern Munich started things off with their massive bid for local talent
Gotze and then came close to claiming Lewandowski as well. The latest
in line is midfielder Ilkay Gundogan who, according to the "Daily Mirror", is the subject of a £20m bid from English giants Arsenal.
“I am keen to ensure he (Ilkay) remains with Borussia Dortmund. He is doing fine so it’s a bit early to move to a club in England or Spain at this point in time. Borussia Dortmund will be coming up with an offer of a new contract soon. We will be able to oversee things much better then,” his father told Kicker.
Given Gundogan’s father’s stance and Dortmund’s reluctance to sell their prized midfielder, it looks like Wenger may have to accept defeat in his adventurous bid for the player.
