Arsenal beat West Bromwich Albion 4-3 in the English League Cup.

Arsenal progressed through to the fourth round of the Capital One Cup as they saw off West Brom on penalties after 120 minutes at the Hawthorns finished 1-1 upon Wednesday.

The first half was something of a tepid affair with neither side really creating any opportunities. The Baggies Steven Reid came closest to breaking the deadlock upon the stroke of the interval when his free-kick hit the top of the Arsenal bar.Arsenal started the second-half much the brighter side and young German midfielder Thomas Eisfeld had an early shot that went over the bar. Eisfeld didnt have to wait too long for a goal however, when his excellent first touch took him past the West Brom defence to slot past Lee Daniels.

The Baggies soon drew level when their own youth player Saido Berahino met a corner unmarked to nod the ball house. It was the 20-year-old Englishmans fourth goal of the competition having bagged a hattrick in the previous circular.

Neither side could crack the deadlock and the game went into extra-time. The best opportunity of the extra period fell to Nicklas Bendtner who appeared to be tidy through until defender Craig Dawsons last ditch tackle nipped it off his toes.

Midfielder Morgan Amalfitano then hit the bar and then moments later saw his close range effort blocked by the Arsenal defence, Per Mertesacker clearing off the line.

Despite the late drama the game end and went to penalties

Serge Gnabry saw his penalty saved by West Broms Lee Daniels to give them the advantage but Craig Dawson and Amalfitano missed to hand Arsenal the opportunity to win it. Spanish full-back Nacho Monreal sent Daniels the wrong way to seal victory.
