With 72 minutes upon the clock, Leandro Bacuna smashed a fabulous free-kick beyond Hart, with the England international left stranded.
Three minutes later, Villa took the lead through Andreas Weimann. The Austrian raced upon to a long punt from Brad Guzan before tapping it beyond Hart where it trickled over the line much to the disbelief of the travelling retain.
City pushed for an equaliser but in the stop they were unable to breach a spirited Villa side.
